The Life Coach Says: Embrace a Whole Month of Love

As we find ourselves in the midst of February, it’s a great time to pause and reflect on the broader nature of love that this month inspires. Traditionally, this time of year has been synonymous with romantic love and “sweethearts.” In modern times, the day offers much more—an opportunity to appreciate the deep connections we share with all the people and things we love.

A Steadfast Kind of Love

In this month devoted to love, let’s take a moment to recognize that our families—both biological and chosen—form the foundation of our emotional lives. Parents, siblings, children, and lifelong friends are the ones who stand by us through life’s uncertainties, celebrating our successes and supporting us during challenges. These profound relationships deserve just as much recognition and appreciation as our romantic ties.
Now that Valentine’s Day has passed, let’s make the month into an opportunity to honor those connections that define who we are.

New Perspectives on Lifelong Bonds

Recently, during a trip with my two adult children, I found myself appreciating our bond in a new light. Traveling together opened up fresh avenues for connection, allowing me to see my children not just as my kids but as independent adults with unique perspectives. This experience reaffirmed the love and commitment we share, highlighting that relationships can evolve beautifully over time.
Now that they are adults, I often find myself filled with a mix of pride and nostalgia for my children, reflecting on their journey from those first steps to the remarkable individuals they have become. This love is characterized not by a need to protect them, but by a deep respect for the choices they make and the lives they lead. I feel immense joy in their accomplishments, empathy in their struggles, and an unwavering commitment to continue to encourage them to navigate life confidently and in their own way.

Celebrating Our Chosen Families

At this time of year, it’s also important to recognize the significance of our chosen families. Friends, mentors, and community members provide love and support that can rival our biological connections. These relationships enrich our lives and expand our networks of care, reminding us that love doesn’t always have to follow bloodlines.
In a world where individualism is often celebrated, it’s essential to remember that we thrive in connection with others. Most world religions agree that love is the source of all things. When we nurture love, in all its forms, we tap into that source. Embrace your chosen family; nurture those bonds, ensuring they remain strong amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life. Small gestures—like reaching out for a chat or planning a get-together—can go a long way in reinforcing these vital connections.

Love in the Midst of Grief

Valentine’s Day can be a difficult one for many of us who have lost a loved one. My Grief & Loss clients talk about the loss of the ‘love of their lives’, the yearning and mourning even several years after the death of a loved one. Sharing precious memories, personal stories, and verbalizing their feelings gives these clients comfort and support. In solidarity, I wanted to share two quotes that have meant a lot to me as I continue to mourn the loss of my own life partner.
“As long as there is love, there will be grief.”
-Heidi Priebe
“Grief is the last act of love we give to our loved one. Where there is deep grief there is great love.”
-Chaplin Robert Orr

There is Love Everywhere!

Experiencing love in nature is a profound reminder of the interconnectedness of life. Mother Nature also offers us a nurturing embrace that sustains us in countless ways. From the gentle blanket of February snow to the vibrant colors of flowers blooming in spring, nature reflects a divine artistry that can feed our souls and ignite our senses no matter what is happening in our personal lives or relationships.
Love is everywhere, you just have to look. Nature reminds us that we are loved, supported, and provided for. This type of love can be especially comforting after we experience loss or disappointment in relational love. It’s one type of love that is always available to us, a reminder of our place in the grander scheme of things.

Continuing to Celebrate Love

Now that we are well into February, let’s use this time to intentionally embrace love in all its forms. The “month of love” can inspire us to express our feelings openly, appreciating the important people in our lives whose love uplifts and sustains us.
Consider making it a commitment to reach out to a different family member or close friend regularly for the rest of the month. Share your fondest memories, express gratitude for their role in your life, and discuss how you can create more cherished moments together. This practice not only enhances your understanding of one another but also reinforces the love that exists within your circle.
You could also plan to regularly walk in nature for the rest of this month to bask in Mother Nature’s unfailing, unwavering love. If you are experiencing grief during this season, reach out for support. You are not alone, and I especially am listening.

Embracing Love in All Its Forms

As we navigate February, let’s take this opportunity to embrace the richness of love that continually surrounds us. Our families—both biological and chosen—offer vital support and warmth that elevate our lives in countless ways. Nature offers a grounding touchstone, a reminder of our source through the ups and downs of life.
This month, let your heart be open to all the diverse forms of love that sustain you. Recognize and appreciate those who stand by you through life’s challenges and victories. By celebrating these relationships and supports throughout February, we can cultivate a culture of love that extends well beyond Valentine’s Day, fostering bonds that will last a lifetime.
