When I ask them what’s standing between them and their goals, many of my life coaching clients use statements like these:
“I’m just not motivated to stick with it.”
“I feel stuck in a hole.”
“I’m chasing my tail, just trying to keep my head above water instead of going in a purposeful direction with my life.”
It doesn’t have to be this way, and life coaching can help.
Life can sometimes feel like a series of tasks and obligations. When we’re just ticking items off our checklist, it leaves us drained and disconnected from our true desires – which are like a roadmap to our life’s purpose.
Discovering your inner motivation is not just about finding a fleeting source of energy to accomplish tasks, it also means tapping into your inner fire, the wellspring of purpose that can sustain you through life’s ups and downs.
Whether you’re striving for professional success, personal growth, a healthier lifestyle, or a feeling of personal peace, motivation is the key that can unlock your potential. In today’s blog, we’re talking about how to find and nurture your own personal motivation. Here are 8 steps that will help you do just that.
1. Identify Your Goals & Understand Your “Why”
Do you have personal goals like moving more, better relationships, or worrying less? These goals are the spark and the compass to finding your motivation again. The first step in achieving these goals is to add kindling to the spark by understanding your “why.” This means digging deep to discover the underlying reasons behind your goals. Ask yourself:
- Why do I want to achieve this goal?
- What will it mean for me and my life?
- How will accomplishing this goal impact those around me?
2. Set Clear, Achievable Goals
Motivation thrives on clarity. When your goals are vague, it’s hard to muster the energy to pursue them. Break down your larger goals into smaller, actionable steps. This not only makes your goals seem more manageable but also provides you with a series of wins that can keep your motivation high. These steps create small amounts of kindling so, instead of being smothered, the spark can begin to ignite.
3. Develop a Routine
Consistency is key to sustaining motivation. Developing a daily routine that aligns with your goals can fan the flames of your success. This could mean setting aside specific times each day for exercise, meditation, or working on a personal project that gets you closer to your goal. Routines help to create habits, and habits reduce the amount of willpower needed to stay on track.
4. Surround Yourself with Positivity
Your environment plays a crucial role in your motivation levels. Surround yourself with positive influences that inspire and support you. This includes:
- People. Seek out and spend time with those who uplift you and share your aspirations. Remind yourself that growth does not happen inside your comfort zone.
- Content. Consume media that motivates and energizes you, whether it’s books, podcasts, or inspirational quotes. Remember that the news and social media are often very dysregulating.
- Spaces. Create a physical space that energizes you. Setting small amounts of time aside to create a clutter-free, inspiring workspace will pay off in spades, as it significantly boosts your productivity and motivation.
5. Celebrate Small Wins
As your fire builds, acknowledging and celebrating your progress is essential for maintaining motivation. Each small step forward is a victory and a testament to your effort and dedication. Take time to reward yourself for each achievement, whether it’s through a simple act of self-care, a special treat, or sharing your success with loved ones.
6. Stay Flexible and Adaptable
Life is unpredictable, and setbacks are inevitable. The key to maintaining motivation is staying flexible and adaptable. When things don’t go as planned, instead of giving up, reassess and adjust your approach. View challenges as opportunities to grow and learn rather than obstacles to your success.
7. Seek Inspiration Regularly
Inspiration can be a powerful catalyst for motivation. Regularly seek out sources of inspiration to reignite your passion and remind you of why you started. Inspiration can come from the most unexpected places, so stay open to it.
8. Practice Self-Compassion
Lastly, be kind to yourself. The journey to achieving your goals is not always smooth, and you may stumble along the way. Practice self-compassion by treating yourself with the same understanding and patience you would offer a friend. Acknowledge your efforts, forgive your mistakes, and keep moving forward.
